NHTSA reportedly asks for GM, Ford and Toyota data in Jeep probe

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Center for Auto Safety, a group founded by Ralph Nader and the Consumers Union, have reportedly filed a 69-page grievance with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requesting they investigate the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Center maintains that in a rear-end collision, the placement of the fuel tank below and just ahead of the rear bumper has made the SUV more prone to fires. According to the Center's figures, that model Grand Cherokee suffers six times more fires than more recent models, and five times more fires than the competition's SUVs.

NHTSA has already begun its inquiry, so far finding that the Jeep SUV's fire incident rate is about the same as with its competition. However, NHTSA is now said to be seeking information on the 1993-2004 Chevrolet Blazer, 1993-2004 Ford Explorer and 1993-2004 Toyota 4Runner hoping to get a better look at defect and warranty claims and lawsuits. None of the other companies, General Motors, Ford or Toyota, has commented on NHTSA's request for information. Chrysler moved the gas tank on the Grand Cherokee inside the frame on the 2005 model, and says it is cooperating with the government's probe.

Gordon gets new main sponsor

Jeff Gordon will campaign the "Drive To End Hunger" as his main sponsor from 2011, as DuPont scales back on its backing of the four-time Sprint Cup Series champion. The AARP Foundation and Hendrick Motorsports announced a three-year deal to have Gordon and his team as ambassadors for an initiative to end hunger in America, specially among 60-plus seniors. The agreement will cover 22 races per year, with DuPont and Pepsi expected to remain involved, featuring as main sponsors in a small number of events

Hendrick, Gordon Confirm Three-Year AARP Sponsorship

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Rick Hendrick never panicked as the season stretched on and he still didn't have a sponsorship deal for Jeff Gordon.

Why? Because he always had a contingency plan to fall back on. It gave him the ability to be discerning when it came to the four-time NASCAR champion.

Then came the potential pairing with the AARP Foundation, which began talks on a sponsorship program with Hendrick Motorsports in September. The deal quickly fell into place, and the foundation's "Drive to End Hunger" campaign was announced Wednesday as Gordon's primary sponsor for the next three years.

"We had a deal in our pocket. It was a verbal agreement," Hendrick said of the second suitor, which he refused to identify. "But this one came only faster, quicker and had more potential."

More potential for both sides.

Showdown at the Gold Coast Corral - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Back in the Mad Men days, just about everyone was either a General Motors man or a Ford man. Cadillac or Lincoln. Buick or Mercury. Nowadays it may be as much about Toyota vs Honda, but the Detroit rivalry is far from dead. Arguably more than anywhere else, it's played out in Australia, where it's all about GM's Holden versus Ford...in the showrooms, on the streets and, perhaps most of all, on the race track.

While up in this hemisphere the Detroit automakers play out their rivalries in stock cars on super-speedways, Down Under it's all about the V8 Supercars series. And this past weekend's race at Surfer's Paradise was one for the ages.

This year's Gold Coast 600 drew a star-studded lineup of international racing superstars from around the world: names like Castroneves, Bourdais, Franchitti, Dixon, Salo and Villeneuve. But it was the seasoned series veterans racing against the fresh-faced newcomers who made for some of the most nail-biting action you're ever likely to see. It was all about defending champ Jamie Whincup in the Team Vodafone Holden Commodore against young Shane Van Gisbergen in the Stone Brothers/SP Tools Ford Falcon. Watch it all unfold down to the line in the video after the jump. Thanks to all for the tips!

Consumer Reports: 2010 Reliability scores as predictable as Asian cars are... reliable

Consumer Reports reliability report 2010

Consumer Reports has released its annual reliability scores for the automotive industry. The 2010 edition reads like the 2009 report... which reads like the 2008 publication, which reminds us of the 2007 version that was similar to the 2006 release. Asia is once again at the head of the class while America has reportedly made great strides and Germany is a mixed bag.

Even with a recent rash of recalls, Toyota (along with Scion and Lexus) is still near near the top of CR's reliability chart. Honda and Acura are also listed as producing highly reliable vehicles, with only the four-cylinder Accord and TSX receiving average ratings. Nissan had a strong showing despite the fact that its Cube, in the first year it has appeared in this report, received a below average score. The Nissan Titan was also hit as being below average. The rest of the lineup however, was rated average or better, including the entire Infiniti model line. Subaru, Hyundai and Kia all had good scores as well, with only Subie's WRX falling below average.

The U.S. automakers made major improvements for 2010. Eighty-three percent of the Chevrolet lineup received scores of average or better. In total, nearly 70 percent of the entire General Motors family is rated at average or better. Ford is the top domestic manufacturer on the list though, with 90 percent of its lineup being given ratings of at least average. That figure is inclusive of the Lincoln brand. It's not all good news in the states unfortunately as none of the Chrysler products were able to receive a rating higher than average.

Reliability for European cars has always been an journey filled with ups and downs. The 2010 reliability scores are no exception. Porsche and Volvo are near the top of the industry while Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi are among the worst. BMW was certainly not helped by its N54 engine, Mercedes has six of 13 models receiving below average ratings and Audi got the same ratings for 75 percent of its lineup. On the flip side, the Porsche Boxster has the highest rated reliability in the entirety of the report.

Check out the full press release after the jump.

Denny Hamlin Gets Serious as Chase Crunch Arrives

Making eye contact with reporters, speaking in a strong voice, gesturing for emphasis, Denny Hamlin all but declared the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship was his to lose in the hour after he won the final regular season race Sept. 11 at his home track in Richmond, Va.

His body language seemed to challenge anyone to believe differently. And five races into the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, Hamlin is every bit on track to back up the words.

He felt he could win or contend on every single of the 10 Chase tracks and, in the past, it might have seemed more bravado than measured confidence from the NASCAR "young gun."

But this is a different Hamlin. The 2010 Hamlin model says the proper championship mindset has at last matched his considerable talent. And he is doing everything he needs to do to give four-time defending series champ Jimmie Johnson a real run for a fifth.

Johnson holds a 41-point edge over second place Hamlin entering Sunday's race at the half-mile Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, where the Tums Fast Relief 500 is being billed as mano y mano -- a heavyweight fight of sorts between Hamlin and Johnson, who have combined to win every race there in the last four years.

"People would think so, I would think so,'' Hamlin said of comparing the race to a title fight. "I feel like if it is mano y mano, we've been in a lot of green-white-checkers where we've been on the front row together, so it should be interesting.''

Webber praises ?remarkable? Korea

Practice pacesetter Mark Webber said the Korean Grand Prix organisers had done a 'remarkable' job with the Yeongam track and should receive no criticism for their efforts. The race was in danger of being cancelled amid fears that the circuit would not be ready in time, but it was given the green light for its inaugural Formula 1 race to go ahead, and today's opening practice sessions ran largely smoothly - despite much of the off-track infrastructure being far from complete

Renault says beating Mercedes unlikely

Renault team boss Eric Boullier believes beating Mercedes in the championship this season will be an "uphill struggle". The French squad is 43 points behind the reigning champion team - fourth in the standings - with just three races to go, meaning Renault will have to score strongly in order to have a shot at beating its main rival.

Ducati thankful to Yamaha over test

Ducati has thanked rival team Yamaha for allowing Valentino Rossi to ride the Italian bike in the post-season test at Valencia. "The truth is we had expected this solution, considering the fine relationship we have had with Yamaha over the past months and in particular with Lin Jarvis, who in any case I want to thank," Ducati's MotoGP project manager Alessandro Cicognani told Gazzetta dello Sport.

NASCAR Goes Green, Switches to Ethanol Mix for 2011

Filed under:

CONCORD, N.C. -- NASCAR Chairman Brian France announced Saturday that the stock car series will be switching to a 15 percent American-made ethanol mix in its Sunoco race fuel beginning in the 2011 season.

NASCAR's exclusive fuel supplier, Sunoco, has been working with the series to develop a suitable mixture -- called Sunoco Green E15 -- and race teams have been using it during test sessions for the past several months. It's a big step for NASCAR, which only began using unleaded fuel a little more than two years ago.

"A couple of years ago we laid out what we hoped would be a smart, environmentally smart approach in all areas of the industry of NASCAR, given we have lots of partners and most importantly our fans who want to continually see this sport evolve and be smart in every area when it comes to the environment and when it comes to things they care about,'' France said.

All three of NASCAR's national touring series will use the fuel. NASCAR Vice President for Competition Robin Pemberton said the initial feedback from teams has been positive. He expects there to be a slight increase in horsepower and to have a negligible affect on fuel mileage.

"All drivers like more power so they all have smiles on their faces for that,'' Pemberton said, promising further development during test sessions and also at NASCAR's Research and Development Center.

Hanninen clinches win in Scotland

Juho Hanninen celebrated his Intercontinental Rally Challenge title in perfect style by winning the Rally of Scotland, his third victory of the season. Hanninen had ended the preceding round in Sanremo on the cusp of the championship - needing just one more point to beat his Skoda team-mate Jan Kopecky to the crown. Skoda then decided not to enter Kopecky for Scotland, ensuring that Hanninen would be champion, and billing this weekend's event as his lap of honour
