2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 ? First Drive Review
The whole 392 thing was a total coincidence. So says Dodge Challenger chief engineer Tom McCarthy. In 2009, McCarthy and his team were discussing a punch-out of the Challenger SRT8?s rather peaky 6.1-liter V-8 for more mid-range torque.

Hyundai confirms 2012 Veloster for Detroit, Accent for New York
Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, New York Auto Show, Hatchback, Hyundai
During a media briefing this week, Hyundai officials confirmed that its highly anticipated Veloster hatchback (name subject to change...) will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. This comes as no surprise, since the car was originally rumored to debut at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year or possibly at next week's LA Auto Show.
Hyundai has yet to confirm what will power the sporty little hatch, but based on what we learned during a powertrain deep-dive we attended, we're pretty certain that the automaker's new 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder engine will be found underhood. With the help of direct injection, this engine is estimated to produce 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque while still returning at least 40 mpg on the highway. It will also be mated to a new six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
In not-as-sporty news, Hyundai also revealed that the upcoming 2012 Accent will make its public debut at the New York Auto Show this spring. Once again, mum's the word on what to expect in terms of powertrain, equipment levels and pricing, but we do know that the Accent is expected to achieve 42 mpg highway when it debuts.

Roush-Fenway Drivers Coming Up Short Again in Chase
Filed under: Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Roush Fenway Racing, Chase for the Sprint Cup, Sprint Cup, NASCAR
A year ago, two drivers of the Roush-Fenway Racing team found their way to NASCAR's illustrious Chase for the Sprint Cup.They finished rather unspectacularly.
Greg Biffle held the banner highest for the proud Ford operation, winding up seventh after the season's final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway last November. His teammate, Carl Edwards, finished eleventh.
Neither garnered a win during that 2009 campaign -- one that seemed to start in quite the fashion with Matt Kenseth's sweep of the season's first two races, including the Daytona 500.
Fortunes seemed to be in the organization's favor this season after all three of those drivers -- Biffle, Edwards and Kenseth -- made it into the top 12 at the Chase cutoff point in September.

Swapping Crew 'Like Changing a Spring,' Crew Chief Chad Knaus Says
Filed under: Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Chase for the Sprint Cup, Crew Chiefs, Pit Crews, Sprint Cup, Hendrick Motorsports, Sports Business and Media, NASCAR
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Chad Knaus defended the decision to dump Jimmie Johnson's crew with two races remaining, a move he said was done for the overall good of Hendrick Motorsports.Knaus downplayed the significance of making a move viewed by many as cutthroat for a four-time championship winning team.
"I hate to say this as bluntly as it is, but it's like changing a spring or changing a shock," he said. "You have to put the best components together to try to win the championship. Unfortunately, we're not in the situation where (Gordon) can win the championship right now from this building, and that's what it's about -- this building."
"I don't think people understand it's not an easy decision," the crew chief said Tuesday, a day after Hendrick Motorsports said Jeff Gordon's crew would pit Johnson for the rest of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
"There are emotions involved. We love our guys. We eat, sleep, drink with them. We win with them and we lose with them. But ultimately it is bigger than seven guys. We are 520-people strong here (at Hendrick Motorsports)."

NASCAR Penalizes Cup Team, Suspends Crew Chief Indefinitely
Filed under: Talladega Superspeedway, Pit Crews, NASCAR
Three crew members from the No. 46 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team have been suspended indefinitely by NASCAR for major violations found in opening day inspection at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway last weekend.Crew chief Thomas Tucker, car chief Richard Boga and team manager Tony Furr -- a veteran Cup Series team member -- received indefinite suspensions for three rules violations, the most serious involving adding weight pellets to the lower A-Frames of the No. 46 driven by Michael McDowell.
McDowell and car owner Dusty Whitney were also penalized 50 championship points. McDowell qualified 15th and finished 35th in the Amp Energy 500 at Talladega. He's ranked 44th in the standings after making 24 races, primarily as a start-and-park operation.

The most unpredictable track in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series more than lived up to its reputation Sunday as Talladega Superspeedway put the top three drivers in the Chase for the Sprint Cup through a tumultuous game of Chutes and Ladders over the course of 188 laps of racing. When it was over, all three -- Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick -- had somehow escaped with solid, top-10 finishes, but the Chase for the Sprint Cup was even tighter than before, at least as a three-way battle.
Johnson finished seventh and added eight points to his slim lead over Hamlin, who finished ninth and is now 14 points behind. But Harvick, by virtue of his miraculous runner-up finish in a damaged car, made it a true three-man contest, pulling to within 38 points of Johnson after trailing by 62.
Harvick (battling upper right with the No. 33 of Bowyer late in the race) had been competitive through much of the early race, leading seven times for 11 laps, until fate intervened on lap 141 when his teammate, eventual race winner Clint Bowyer, got into Marcos Ambrose and turned him sideways in front of Harvick, who had nowhere to go.
Harvick's team taped up the front-end damage and sent him back out, keeping him on the lead lap, but the number of people in the grandstands who thought Harvick had any further chance could have fit into a rowboat.
The damage "definitely didn't help," Harvick said. "But we still were able to get up in the right position with the 00 (driven by David Reutimann) behind us."
Meanwhile, at about the time of Harvick's crash on this Halloween Sunday, Hamlin was just coming back from the dead.

Aprilia's new Tuono V4R makes "naked" even sexier
Filed under: Motorcycle
It takes a lot to make a term like "naked" any sexier, but Aprilia has managed to do exactly that with its latest "naked bike," the new Tuono V4R. A beast of a machine (that looks sort of like an insect), the Tuono is based on the RSV4, but ditches the bodywork for a two-kilogram weight savings and a better view of the 1000cc DOHC V4 engine, which produces 162 horsepower and 81 pound-feet of tire-smoking torque. But the Tuono isn't just about grunt. In fact, it's one of the most sophisticated naked bikes on the market, and it's coming to the United States towards the end of next year.
Keeping all the twist and shout in check are the Aprilia Performance Ride Control and advanced traction control systems. The PRC is a three-position wheelie control system with programmable launch control that employs more accelerometers and gyroscopes than an Apple Store, allowing a little wheelspin out of the corners and offering eight modes that are adjustable right from the handlebars. The traction control, meanwhile, can automatically optimize itself according to the tires you've fitted. Yeah, that's pretty sophisticated. Pretty sexy, too, and you can check it out in closer detail in the high-resolution image gallery below.
